Overwhelmed by an Organizing Project? Here’s How to Tackle It Step by Step

That organizing project keeps nagging at you, but you keep avoiding it. It feels too big to handle.
What if I cause an avalanche?
What am I even supposed to do with all this stuff?
I wish someone would just tell me what to do!

Listen up—I’m about to break down my process for breaking through the overwhelm.

1. Start with the Easy Wins

Ease into the process by making quick, obvious decisions:
✅ Trash
✅ Dishes
✅ Laundry
✅ Items that already have a home—just put them away!

2. Work in a Zone or by Category

🔹 Zone = a specific area (floor, surfaces, shelf)
🔹 Category = a type of item (clothes, papers, toys, miscellaneous)

Choose one focus at a time to prevent feeling scattered.

3. Declutter as You Go (If You’re Up for It)

🔸 Place obvious donation items in a box or bag immediately.
🔸 If a decision feels tough, set the item aside and circle back later.
🔸 On your first pass, prioritize momentum—getting the space back in shape ASAP is the goal!

4. Organize & Put Things Away

If your project extends beyond one space, temporary solutions are your best friend:
📦 Use temporary storage while sorting through your home.
🚫 Don’t rush into “final” organizing solutions—they can slow you down.
♻️ Repurpose freed-up organizers before buying new ones!
🔄 Categories may grow as you go, so wait before committing to long-term storage.

(Hint: Cardboard boxes work just fine in the meantime!)

Extra Tips for Tackling a Project Solo

Set Timers – Try 15- to 30-minute bursts. Knowing you only have to work for a set time can be freeing and energizing! You might even want to keep going when the timer ends.

🎶 Play Music – Choose what fuels your focus.
🔹 Low energy? Upbeat music can help.
🔹 Feeling anxious? Calming music might be the way to go.

📍 Start Small If You’re Feeling Major Overwhelm
One table. One drawer. One shelf. One box.
Tiny steps still move you forward—and that’s a WIN.

Remember the old proverb:
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
